Fathima Hospital Kannur Fetal medicine unit (FMU)

The fetal medicine unit (FMU) provides screening services for all pregnant women. The unit also specialises in additional care for those who have previously had a pregnancy with fetal abnormalities or who have issues with their current pregnancy.

What we do:

Screening for fetal abnormalities

Combined test: a screening test for Down's syndrome in pregnancy. It is available to you between 11 weeks and 13 weeks plus 6 days of your pregnancy

Quadruple test: a screening test for Down's syndrome and spina bifida. This test is available to you between 15 weeks and 22 weeks and six days of your pregnancy.

Antenatal diagnosis:

Chorionic villus sampling (CVS): a test to detect specific genetic disorders. It is available between 11 and 14 weeks of your pregnancy

Amniocentesis: a test for Down's syndrome or other specific genetic disorders. It is available from 16 weeks of your pregnancy

Cordocentesis: a test to detect abnormalities using blood from the umbilical cord. Ultrasound monitoring of high risk pregnancies

ULTRASOUND SCANS AND TESTS

The Ultrasound and Fetal Medicine unit offers both a consultant-led and sonographer-led service. Using state of the art ultrasound equipment, you and your partner can share in the experience of seeing your baby grow and mark the milestones in their development as your pregnancy progresses.

You may also choose to have a 3D/4D scan to further enhance the excitement of seeing your baby as he/she grows.

A 3D/4D ultrasound scan focuses on your baby's face and facial features. It is not a diagnostic scan and therefore does not include measurements of fetal growth or weight. The success of the scan depends on the fetal position and gestation. Care will be taken to ensure that optimum images are obtained, however on occasions examinations may be unsuccessful and/or need to be rescheduled. A DVD and CD with Jpeg still images and some thermal images will be presented to you at the end of the scan. The sonographer or consultant performing the scan will be able to answer any further questions you may have.

GENERAL AND HIGH RISK OBSTETRICS

Pregnancy is an exciting time for any women, but complications may develop sometimes even in healthy women. Most pregnancy complications can easily be detected and prevented with routine prenatal care. There are many health issues that can create a risk to you and your baby. At the birth centre early screening is done and prenatal care is provided to monitor well-being of the mother and foetus during their pregnancy.

A birthing centre is a healthcare facility, staffed by registered nurse-midwives, certified nurse midwife, obstetric and paediatric consultants.  A birth centre presents a more home-like environment with amenities such as private rooms with soft lighting.

A pregnancy is said to be high risk pregnancy if mother have certain medical conditions or other factors that threaten the development of foetus and/or increases the risk of complications for mother.

With frequent visits to doctor, women with high risk pregnancy can enjoy a healthy and successful pregnancy. Having quality prenatal care is necessary to minimise the risks to both you and your baby

Fathima Hospital Kannur The Nursing Care

We’re here for you from the very start of your pregnancy through to the birth of your baby and beyond to guide you through this exciting time in your life. We tailor maternity care to your individual needs. Our dedicated team will look after you every step of the way, from your first antenatal appointment through to our health visitors seeing you and your baby at home after birth.

Our private midwives can ensure you get the support and care you need before and during your birth in hospital. We have a range of options regarding hospital births.

When the time is right, you make your way to the hospital and your midwife will meet you there. Your private midwife is then able to be clinically responsible for your care throughout birth. If all goes well, it is just you, your birth partner and your very own private midwife giving you her undivided care and attention. If she has any concerns at all, she will ask the hospital staff for their assistance, but she will stay with you, involved in your care throughout. If one is available, she will also arrange for a private room for you after baby is born.
